Every year, tens of thousands* of Jewish young adults are gifted with a life-changing journey to Israel. Before their enlightening Birthright Israel expedition, they tend to take Israel for granted. Like the generation before them and the generations to come, these individuals have little concept of a world without a Jewish homeland. It’s been 20 years since Birthright Israel alumnus Daniel Samoohi was gifted with a trip to Israel, and he still remembers every moment. Not only was he able to feel “the mystique and history of Israel,” but he also felt close to his grandfather, an Israeli citizen who had passed away. “As I prayed on the Kotel, I could feel my grandfather communicating with me, and it’s a feeling I will never forget,” wrote Samoohi in a letter to Birthright Israel Foundation following his 2000 trip. When Gene Hoffman was growing up in Connecticut he was only a little boy, barely finished with kindergarten when he first faced discrimination for being Jewish. Prior to the 1940s and 1950s, Jews in America faced harsh realities of antisemitism. As our people began breaking into industries like entertainment and law, the antisemitism only worsened. From universities, hotels, country clubs, and medical professions – Jews faced restrictions. Hoffman can recall getting into a fistfight at the age of four because he was Jewish. Read More

by Birthright Israel Foundation May 14, 2020 at 12:41 pm

What’s the game plan when you have over 750,000 alumni spread out across 68 countries amidst a global pandemic? Connect them. That’s exactly what Birthright Israel is doing with their new initiative, Birthright Israel Connect. The online program aims to connect alumni of the program with each other through trained facilitators and educators. Each session aims to spark meaningful conversations about the effects of COVID-19 in their home countries while providing a platform where young Jews can share their thoughts and personal stories. “We believe Birthright Israel Connect can build a bridge between our alumni, especially during times of social distancing where many can feel far away from their communities, friends, and family,” says Gidi Mark, CEO of Birthright Israel.
